Papertrey October Blog Hop Challenge

This month Nichole challenged us with this:

There is always a lot of focus on Christmas in our industry this time of year, as that is what the majority   of the population celebrates.  However, this month's blog hop is dedicated to those that celebrate winter  holidays other than Christmas.  Create a project that celebrates Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or some other  winter holiday as we embrace everyone's beliefs in a celebration of diversity through paper crafting.

Because I celebrate Christmas,  this was a stretch for me.  After researching some information on Kwanzaa, I realized that it wasn't always celebrated integrated with Christianity, but over the years it has evolved into a double celebration for many people.  The principles that this African-American Holiday celebrate are:
  • Umoja (Unity): To strive for and to maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race.
  • Kujichagulia (Self-Determination): To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves.
  • Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility): To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers' and sisters' problems our problems, and to solve them together.
  • Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics): To build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together.
  • Nia (Purpose): To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.
  • Kuumba (Creativity): To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
  • Imani (Faith): To believe with all our heart in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.
I was glad to learn something new.  For my card I used a popular symbol for Kwanzaa, a Kinara, a group of 7 candles to represent the 7 principles.  Here's my card:
Thanks for looking! Enjoy the hop!
